Summer is finally here, which means lots of sunshine and sometimes very warm weather. In
the security industry some posts require mobile foot patrols in the direct sunlight. To prevent
heat-induced injures such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke while conducting
normal day-to-day security duties, personnel should be sure to drink at least 8 ounces every 15 to 30 minutes of water and sports drinks (such as Gatorade).
Experts also suggest avoiding caffeinated drinks, dressing in light-colored, lightweight, loose fitting clothing, and using sunscreen with at least 15 SPF. When available, security personnel
should utilize any natural (trees) or artificial (overhangs, guard shacks, hats, umbrellas etc.)
shade to their advantage as much as possible
Below are 3 types of heat-related injuries and symptoms. Should you experience these symptoms, move away from direct exposure to sunlight and try to hydrate. If symptoms continue contact your physician immediately. REMEMBER SAFETY FIRST!
Dehydration: The initial signs and symptoms of mild dehydration in adults appear when
the body has lost about 2% of its total fluid. These mild dehydration symptoms are often (but
not limited to):
— Thirst
— Loss of Appetite
— Dry Skin
— Skin Flushing
— Dark Colored Urine
— Dry Mouth
— Fatigue or Weakness
— Chills
— Head Rushes
If dehydration continues and the total fluid loss reaches 5%, the following effects of dehydration are normally experienced:
— Increased heart rate
— Increased respiration
— Decreased sweating
— Decreased urination
— Increased body temperature
— Extreme fatigue
— Muscle cramps
— Headaches
— Nausea
When the body reaches 10% fluid loss emergency help is needed IMMEDIATELY! 10% fluid loss and above is often fatal. Symptoms of severe dehydration include:
— Vomiting
— Racing pulse
— Shriveled skin
— Dim vision
— Painful urination
— Confusion
— Difficulty breathing
— Seizures
— Chest and Abdominal pain
Heat Exhaustion: Heat exhaustion is a less severe form of heat-related illness that can develop after extended exposure to high temperatures and dehydration. People that are most prone to heat exhaustion are people with high blood pressure, elderly people, and people working or exercising in a very warm environment. Some signs of heat exhaustion include:
— Muscle cramps or aches
— Pale, moist skin
— Fatigue or weakness
— Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
— Headache
— Anxiety or irritability
— Feeling faint or dizzy
— Normal or slightly elevated body
Heat Stroke: Heat stroke is a serious condition which happens when the body produces or
absorbs more heat than it can get rid of. Heat stroke is usually caused by extended exposure to high temperatures and dehydration. Other risk factors include cardiovascular disease, certain prescription medications, and alcohol use. Some signs of heat stroke can include all of the above signs, but often have:
— Body temperature greater than 104 F
— Mental status changes
— Seizures
— Blood pressure instability and breathing problems
— May or may not be sweating
KA’ANAPALI BEACH CLUB BY DIAMOND RESORTS
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS WITH BROWNSTONE SECURITY
Brownstone Security’s Enterprise Series DVR has been installed at Ka’anapali Beach Club in Maui, Hawaii to provide a site-wide integrated CCTV solution. This is the first surveillance project by Brownstone Security as part of a rollout across the United States at many of the resorts owned and operated by Diamond Resorts International.
The Ka’anapali Beach Club is an extremely popular vacation destination on the island of Maui, Hawaii, with over 750,000 guests per year. Ka’anapali Beach Club is typical of the demanding security environment that resorts can create. The original CCTV surveillance system utilized two different DVR systems that offered poor video quality, which would not be admissible in a court of law as evidence. Using ‘Multiview and Control Center’, Brownstone Security’s Enterprise series DVR and management software, the security team now has a single integrated solution that can control, monitor and record high-quality video from all 32 cameras at 30 fps, at D1 resolution.
The system will also provide live feeds to the Diamond Resort International corporate office located in Las Vegas, NV. The security team can now effectively manage the safety of the resort using CCTV, as well as quickly and easily retrieve recorded footage in the event of an incident. Jimmy Hunsucker, director of security at Ka’anapali Beach Club, says, “Brownstone Security’s Enterprise DVR system provides us with a great tool for monitoring the security of the resort. The video quality is outstanding and the features of ‘Multiview and Control Center’ are far superior to those of the old CCTV system. The flexibility of the system allows us to have ‘Multiview’ on workstations on managers’ desks around the resort
and not just in the security control room.”
The cameras are a combination of Brownstone Security’s Super High Res. 540 TV Lines domes and vandal domes with Infra-Red IR’s. The video is recorded on 2 DVRs with a total of 2 Terabytes of storage providing over 30 days of continuous recordings from all cameras at a full frame rate.
Brownstone Security provides security officers and security guards for a variety of clients including retail facilities, industrial facilities, shopping centers, home owner associations, office complexes, government agencies and a variety of other industries.
